Mrs. McPherson has led an active and well-rounded musical career that includes performing, composing, arranging, and teaching. McPherson has performed in back up orchestras for artists Hubert Laws, Red Skelton, Grover Washington, Jr., and the Four Tops. She has also performed in the New Bedford Symphony, the Cape Cod Orchestra, Boston Civic Orchestra, the West Wind Brass, the Palomar Symphony Orchestra, the Idaho Falls Symphony Orchestra as well as led her own ensembles. Her compositions and arrangements have been performed in recitals at Tufts University, the Performing Arts Center in Concord, Massachusetts and by her student ensembles in school performances.
McPherson received her bachelor’s degree in Trumpet Performance from New England Conservatory in 1999 and her master’s degree in Music Composition from Tufts University in 2004. She expects to complete her doctorate degree in Music Education from Boston University before her 100th birthday.
McPherson regards teaching as a great honor and responsibility; her students inspire her to strive to be the best role model she can be. She began her formal teaching career in Braintree, Massachusetts where she taught elementary, middle school and high school instrumental music for two years. She taught elementary and middle school orchestra in Concord, Massachusetts for three years before she and her husband decided to pursue their dream of returning to the West. McPherson currently teaches K-12 music at the West Yellowstone School in West Yellowstone, Montana, a position she has held since 2007.
McPherson lives with her husband, Bruce, on their farm in the Upper Madison Valley where they have a small flock of sheep, several chickens, a dog, and two cats. When not busy with teaching, music, and farm work, McPherson enjoys fishing, kayaking, and hiking on the mountain trails near her home.
