Music Theory
Music Theory is an advanced course designed for musicians in grades 11 - 12 who seek a deeper understanding of the nuts and bolts in the structure of Western Music. Music theory is the study of how music works. It examines the language and notation of music. It seeks to identify patterns and structures in composers' techniques, across or within genres, styles, or historical periods. In a grand sense, music theory distills and analyzes the fundamental parameters or elements of music--rhythm, harmony (harmonic function), melody, structure, form, texture, etc.. This course is recommended for students who are interested in pursuing a career in music or music education. Although this class is not registered with the College Board as an AP class, college texts are used and students planning on majoring in music in college are encouraged to take the AP Music Theory exams.
